FAQs - Real Lived Experiences

Before we set academic goals and prepare sessions with students we conduct a needs analysis on individual students to get a snapshot of their specific needs.  It is a sort of subjective but their perceived and felt needs are unique.  This allows us to gather their knowledge, needs, motivations and more importantly, their goals.   Therefore, we can determine learners’ needs and focus on their individual specific training gap; which is the difference of their current situation from their target situation.   Then we can focus on planning the outline of the course with subsections showing learners how they will learn new skills and build on their competencies and how the topics will systematically build on information gained from the previous one.

Instruction is done in the concept where we explain to them a topic; what it is and how it works and why they should know it and use it and if they do not understand, we help them to refine their knowledge by helping them to recap and retell and then complete a summary of what they learned.  We implement a kind of deliberate formative assessment where we request hand signals on how well they understood the concept by rating 1-5.  In addition, we do summative assessments with quizzes, multiple choice questions and fill-in-the-blanks.  In essence, we must get evidence of learning before we move forward to another topic.

An example of the steps for a topic is as follows:

  • Conduct online Research and view a YouTube video and identify objectives of lesson plan. (with planning, instruction and assessment in mind).
  • Discussion of the topic and writing main points and brainstorming the pros and cons (involves reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, analysis, interpretation, interactive discussions and points for PowerPoint presentation)
  • Role play of individual's views
  • Wrap up discussion – individual's opinion
  • Completes PowerPoint presentation and presents it to me. I must get evidence of  learning before we move to another topic.
  • Diagnostic assessment is completed and an explanation of areas for improvement.

We help individuals to succeed but customizing their learning for them to master concepts in an engaging manner.  We give them the foundational knowledge of the concept, review it and then simplify and clarify it, and sometimes outline the steps for them to better understand it.  Individuals who may not want to return to the mainstream can still be hopeful when they can have an opportunity to experience this holistic educational pathway.

Parents should continue to hold their children’s hand and provide guidance to them as they navigate their educational goals and professional careers because they need parents’ emotional support, mentorship, and financial guidance and to help them expand their professional network so they can open doors to new opportunities and career paths.

For children to fulfill their potential and set realistic goals as they pursue their passions, parents can boost their confidence and resilience by empowering and encouraging them when they face challenges and uncertainties.  When parents take the time to instill a love for learning and exploration and continuous improvement, children are able to pursue lifelong learning opportunities which help them to acquire new skills and stay competitive in this ever-evolving job market.

Parents play a vital role in shaping their children’s educational and professional journeys and by walking alongside them, parents can help them to discover their skills, abilities and interests and navigate challenges whilst seizing every opportunity they get as they explore their strengths and weaknesses.

This balance and sacrifice allowed me to bring a new unique and holistic perspective to stay current with industry trends, best practices and workplace expectations.  I was able to emphasize these skills in my teaching, such as, communication, teamwork and problem-solving and this guidance helped students to develop and showcase practical insights and real-world examples which were very relevant to their future careers.  I was able to bridge the gap between theory and practice for my students so that they now have opportunities to better prepare themselves for the workplace.

Leaving families and cultures behind involves a huge amount of sacrifice but it is important to remember that personal and professional growth go hand in hand.  We must create realistic growth plans and put in the work with sincere effort to execute them.  It is the only way to pave the way for a fulfilling and successful career.  We must stay committed, motivated and determined to execute our long-term goals and aspirations.  Although we may feel like a crisis to maintain the new language, food and new ways of interacting, these opportunities are beneficial as you embrace certain aspects of this new culture.  Maintain your old culture because this will give you a sense of security and make you always feel connected to your roots but try to be open-minded to new ways because it helps in perceiving the world differently.

You can plan interactive and engaging activities by moving beyond traditional comprehension questions and utilize instead, contemporary methods such as, reading and thinking aloud, role-play, worksheets with missing words, word wall, reading varying texts in groups, films, videos and YouTube clips in addition to note taking and writing unconventional book reports.

Give students opportunities to have feed-up where they will identify their learning based goals; feed-back where they will understand how to get there and what they need to work on to get there; and, feed-forward where you can explain what are their next steps in their learning to make the progress they require.  Offer facilitative and diagnostic feedback to ensure that you focus on their strengths and areas for improvement and help them set their learning goals and show them how to achieve these goals.

Ensure that there is ongoing student self-assessment and they have opportunities to judge their own work and identify for themselves where they would like to be in their learning.

This helps to unlock the door for those who are struggling and fearful because this allows them to recognize that not all reading methodologies fit each student and we must keep looking beyond the one-size-fits-all methods.

Connect with students to help them to dig deeper in producing language by motivating them to feel that sense of engagement while speaking and writing. Create Aha! moments by developing students’ communicative competence!

This means that diverse students who are struggling readers and writers will feel inspired to continue focusing on strategies such as visual displays to promote language awareness. Help students to make logical inferences, determine central themes and summarize details and ideas by crafting and structuring texts.

Prepare them for participating effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse peers and show them how to build on each other’s’ ideas and express themselves clearly.

The 3-step process to teach conventions are to provide direct instruction in the concept and what it is and how it works and why they should know and use it; then create opportunities to practice and refine their knowledge of the concept through feedback and self-assessment; then apply the knowledge in their writing to demonstrate that they have understood the concept and help them to refine it through feedback.
